PE, Sport & Physical Activity

Intent

At Half Acres Academy it is our intention that P.E will be delivered via high quality lessons that are fun, engaging and inspire all pupils to lead physically active lives.

PE is delivered through twice weekly PE sessions using an enhanced model based upon the National Curriculum and Early Years Framework. Provision is enriched through effective use of the sports funding focused on the 5 key indicators. The curriculum is coherently planned, and well sequenced, allowing children to gain and retain sufficient knowledge and skills. Long term plans are created to ensure appropriate coverage of knowledge, skills and vocabulary. Schemes are available to help reduce work load and teachers make their own professional judgement to develop medium term plans to meet the needs of all the pupils.

Implementation

Through the Early Years curriculum children have opportunities to develop their physical skills through continuous access to a developmentally appropriate environment. Development Matters states that by the end of reception children must meet the early learning goal in Physical Development to achieve a good level of development. The curriculum is designed to ensure our pupils in Early Years achieve this. We provide opportunities to develop all aspects of moving and handling so that children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements. They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. The Early Learning goal in health and self-care states that children know the importance for good health of physical exercise, and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe. Our pupils regularly participate in physical activity both inside and outdoors in planned programmes of activity and self-initiated tasks.

PE lessons follow a clear, comprehensive and progressive scheme in line with the National Curriculum. Progression grids including knowledge, skills and vocabulary are used by teachers to outline what children should be taught in each year group and reactivate the pupil’s prior knowledge. To ensure children know more and remember more they are given opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills through a wide range of activities. Children build on their skills and are given time to apply these in a variety of ways. By experiencing and exploring a wide range of equipment, children develop transferable skills. They are taught new skills and a given the opportunity to evaluate and improve their performance. We ensure they are able to engage in competitive and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations including inter and intra sporting competitions.

Impact

Children at Half Acres Primary Academy understand the importance of PE and living a healthy lifestyle and how this can be achieved. With high quality teaching they make sustained progress in Physical Education which is measured against age appropriate progression grids and expectations. This allows children to know more and remember more meaning they become confident in their sporting skills and vocabulary. Children will be inspired to develop their love of physical activity and build healthy lifestyles.
