As part of the National Curriculum 2014, learning a modern foreign language has become a requirement for children within KS2. In response, Half Acres has made the decision to teach French across KS2.
At Half Acres, we are determined to develop children’s experience of language acquisition and encourage curiosity about languages, beginning with English. In Key Stage 2, we aim to develop their understanding of what they hear and read, and have an ability to express themselves in speech and writing within another language. We follow the National Curriculum using a programme (La Jolie Ronde scheme of work) designed to extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences between French and English and ensures progression of all skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), knowledge and vocabulary. The MFL progression grid ensures there is a clear sequence that leads to defined goals at the end of year 6 and includes the long term plan for Key Stage 2. Each class has a timetabled lesson each week. French can also be revisited in short sessions throughout the week so that children know more and remember more.
At Half Acres, our French lessons use a variety of sources, primarily the La Jolie Ronde scheme. In addition, books (French versions of the Hungry Caterpillar and the Green Monster), games and songs, including French nursery rhymes, are used to maximise enjoyment and make as many connections to real-life situations as possible. French language books are available to read for pleasure. At the beginning of the year, prior learning is assessed and developed as necessary before the scheme of work is followed. Lessons begin with rapid recall of prior vocabulary to ensure this is embedded.
Lessons focus on speaking and listening. However, when appropriate, children record written work in books, which are passed through the years. This becomes a portfolio of their learning journey and is used as reference to prior learning. The lessons are designed to motivate children from the first moment and are initially mainly practical in focus. They have clear, achievable objectives and incorporate different learning styles. SEND children have access to the curriculum through variation of task, grouping or support from an adult. Teaching is in line with the recommendations laid out in the National Curriculum, with modifications in place which allow for the individual needs of the children, including opportunities for greater depth learning. Learning walls include the vocabulary being taught along with any area that the teacher deems necessary to revise.
Vocabulary and sentence structure is formatively assessed during the lessons and is used to inform future planning. Assessments sheets are completed at the end of term that focuses on the vocabulary and skills.
Children have the knowledge and skills to become linguists. They make sustained progress in MFL. Children have the foundations to learn further languages, equipping them with the skills to converse in other countries.
Leaders ensure the impact of French across school provides a positive experience for all children in terms of outcomes and personal / social development through classroom observations, book scrutiny and pupil interviews.
